The men, women, children, and farming families in Agro-Eco Philippines are one with the Filipino people in opposing the commercialization of Golden Rice, asserting that such move of the regulatory bodies is full of irrationalities after we’ve all seen how conventional agriculture model, upon which the philosophy behind Golden Rice and GMOs is built, has systematically failed over the years and especially now in the time of COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of allowing the commercialization of Golden Rice which is practically useless with the availability of the hundreds of resilient, locally-adapted, high-yielding and good-eating quality rice varieties that organic farmers have already been using and sharing for decades; the government, if it truly cares for the people, must support agroecology for the undisputable fact that it is the only farming approach that is proven very effective in providing nutritious and sufficient food sources (a better way of addressing Vitamin A deficiency that the proponents of Golden Rice promised) and regular income to the millions of farming families, and stimulates the local economies throughout the COVID-19 period.
More and more countries are now moving away from the orbit of GMOs and embracing agroecology in their serious commitment to Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. But what the Philippine government is doing now, in the case of Golden Rice, is the opposite. And in this case, we vow to continue asserting our rights in many ways.
